G5 Trail Collective- Volunteer Coordinator
Introduction
G5 is seeking out a dynamic individual with excellent communication and organizational
skills to lead volunteers, perform trailwork, organize databases, and manage social
media platforms. The candidate will perform a variety of technical trail maintenance and
volunteer coordinating tasks in support of the trail network in the Grandfather Ranger
District and the G5 Volunteer Trail Program. The candidate will be an employee of The
G5 Trail Collective, working out of Camp Grier in Old Fort, NC.
Duration- 5 years+
Knowledge and Skills
Requirements
The candidate must:
●show the upmost ability to independently lead the public and volunteers into the
National Forest, provide clear safety protocols and tool instructions, bring them
back out safely while providing community engagement, a sense of
accomplishment and pride of trail stewardship.
●have knowledge, experience, and skill in basic sustainable trail maintenance
techniques (minimum of 1-2 years), including the use of trail tools, construction
tools, and safety equipment.
●have charismatic and commanding communication skills with the public,
volunteers and coworkers.
●have the ability to work with a broad range of user groups, foster good working
relationships with US Forest Service employees, and volunteers, and facilitate
collaborative meetings of crew leaders and volunteers effectively.
●have skills to recruit, manage, and support volunteers.
●have excellent organizational skills and be able to manage a database of
volunteers.
●have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a truck, trailers and other
related equipment for transport and conducting trail work.
●Provide social media content (write ups, good photography, videos, etc.), that
engages with the community.
Preferred Additional Knowledge & Skills
●WFA or WFR or similar 1st aid.
●Chainsaw certification (bucking/limbing/felling) or the ability to get certified in
those modalities.
●Basic database knowledge (familiar with Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc.)
●Basic social media skills (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, X, etc.), use of a
camera and video.
●Basic website management skills (Wix specifically)
●Knowledge of construction tools and techniques.
Education
• B.S. in Natural Resources, Biology, Soil Sciences, Geology, Hydrology,
Communications, Psychology, Marketing, Business, Outdoor Recreation, Photography,
Video, Media or a combination of related fields of study.
Physical Demands
The candidate routinely lifts, pushes, pulls and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Work will routinely require walking multiple miles over rough and uneven terrain.
Work Environment
The employee will have office space at Camp Grier, but may work anywhere within
driving distance of McDowell County. Some of the work will be performed in a
mountainous, forested environment where the terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky, wet,
and covered with thick and tangled vegetation. Work will can occur in inclement weather
(rain, snow, freezing temperatures or temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and
under dusty conditions. Work requires the use of safety equipment such as boots,
gloves, goggles, and hardhats.
Fieldwork consists of invasive species management, facility construction maintenance,
trail maintenance (brushing, digging, grubbing, raking, rock work surface hardening.
etc.), tree removal, using hand and power tools, project site assessments.
The employee can expect to work an equal amount of time in the office in addition to
field work.
Work Hours
The position will require periodic evening and frequent weekend work to manage
volunteer projects for those volunteers who cannot participate during standard business
hours. The employee will be required to play a key role in the planning and
implementation of the G5 trail workdays.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Work with the U.S. Forest Service, G5, and other partners to plan, coordinate,
and perform trail and trail feature maintenance and construction activities based
on U.S. Forest Service priorities, trail design parameters, and Trail Management
Objectives (TMO).
2. Work with volunteers or youth crews to provide project supervision, trail-related
training, quality control oversight, safety briefings and monitoring of adherence to
safety protocol, tracking and reporting of G5 volunteer hours, and to ensure
volunteer needs are communicated to the U.S. Forest Service and G5 staff.
3. Manage safety documentation and liability coverage under USFS volunteer
agreement and report volunteer hours to USFS and G5 staff.
4. Recruit, train, and host volunteers in a professional manner that builds repeat
participation in the G5 Volunteer Trail Program.
5. Manage a volunteer database and communicate volunteer hours to the USFS or
other partners as needed.6. 7. 8. Develop and conduct trail etiquette and user safety training for a variety of public
audiences.
Develop and conduct trail skills courses for trail volunteers that provide a level of
leadership for future recruitment.
Frequently use photography and video to tell the G5 story and showcase on
social media platforms.
Reports To:
G5 Trail Collective Project Manager, G5 Trails Specialist and G5 Engagement Specialist
Salary
$50,000 a year

Retirement- Camp Grier will match, up to 3%, of an employee contribution to the Camp
Grier employment retirement plan.
Time off- Camp Grier will provide three weeks of paid time off to be used at the
employee's discretion.
