Introduction

The GIS Trail Specialist at G5 Trail Collective leads the planning, design, and delivery of

sustainable trail projects from concept to completion. This position uniquely bridges

office-based GIS analysis with field-based construction leadership, ensuring that

designs translate directly into durable, sustainable trail systems. Working with external

contractors, and agency partners, the specialist ensures projects meet U.S. Forest

Service standards, align with land management goals, and enhance recreation

opportunities while protecting environmental and cultural resources. This position

uniquely bridges office-based GIS analysis and field-based construction leadership,

ensuring designs translate directly into durable, sustainable trail systems

Duration- 5 years+

Knowledge and Skills

The candidate must have:

●B.S. in Natural Resources, Forestry, Biology, Soil Sciences, Geology, Hydrology,

Outdoor Recreation, Business, Computer Science, Construction Management or

a combination in related fields.

●Experience of 2+ years in trail work, GIS mapping, construction, project

management or contracting.

●Proficiency in GIS software such as ARC GIS and QGIS.

●Be able to create multi layered mapping projects.

●Strong ability to analyze complex spatial data, identify patterns, and provide

actionable insights.

●Collect, compile, and maintain geospatial and non-spatial data into databases,

ensuring accuracy and integrity.

●Have excellent communication skills, both verbally and written.

●Be able to negotiate through unexpected outcomes, changes showing flexibility

in complex situations.

●Be physically fit, able to carry up to a 25lb backpack and able to hike up to 5

miles in uneven terrain.

●Having strong relationships with contractors, trail workers, land managers and

staff.

Preferred Additional Knowledge & Skills

●WFA or WFR or similar 1st aid.

●Additional project management and GIS certification(s).

●Chainsaw certification (bucking/limbing/felling) or the ability to get certified in

those modalities.

Key Responsibilities:

Trail Planning & Design

○Design sustainable hiking, biking, equestrian and multi-use trails to

USFS standards, balancing terrain, user experience, and environmental

protection.

○Conduct field reconnaissance, layout, flagging, and trail logs using GPS

and GIS data.

○Produce detailed construction documents, maps, and technical

specifications for use by crews and contractors.

○Collaborate with U.S. Forest Service staff, contractors, and local

governments to align projects with land management objectives.

●GIS & Spatial Data Management

Maintain and update G5’s GIS trail database in alignment with USFS

and industry standards.

Create professional-quality maps for planning, field navigation, and

project reporting.

Perform spatial analyses to support trail routing, environmental review,

and long-term network planning

●Field Leadership with G5 Crews

Provide on-site technical guidance to ensure work meets design intent,

safety standards, and sustainability practices.

Help coordinate work plans, allocate tasks, and adapt operations in

response to field conditions.

●Contract Oversight & Quality Control

Assist in drafting trail construction contracts, with emphasis on technical

maps and design specifications.

Attend pre-bid site visits, respond to contractor questions, and help

evaluate bids.

Monitor contractor performance in the field through inspections at key

milestones, and resolve deficiencies before closeout.

●Administrative & Reporting

Prepare project documentation, specifically maps, for funders and

partners.

Provide geospatial data, visualizations, and technical descriptions for

grant applications and compliance requirements.

Contributing to trail assessments and maintenance reporting

Provide mapping and technical expertise to partner-led initiatives,

including forest restoration and post-storm recovery.

Salary

$65,000 per year

Benefits

Retirement- Camp Grier will match, up to 3%, of an employee contribution to the Camp

Grier employment retirement plan.

Time off- Camp Grier will provide three weeks of paid time off to be used at the

employee's discretion.
