G5 Trail Collective- Special Projects Manager
Overview
The G5 Project manager will primarily manage several trailwork crews and volunteer
programs working in the National Forest. Implementing trail projects, repairs and
seasonal maintenance will be the key role. Additional duties will assist in creating
contracting documents for recreational trails, USFS roads and related infrastructure.
The position will spend time in the field to inspect, manage, monitor, assess and protect
the natural resource. The candidate will create trail projects and assist in maintaining all
trails in the Old Fort area. The candidate will be an employee of The G5 Trail Collective,
working out of Camp Grier in Old Fort, NC or within driving distance of McDowell
County.
Knowledge and Skills
The candidate must have:
●B.S. in Natural Resources, Forestry, Biology, Soil Sciences, Geology, Hydrology,
Psychology, Outdoor Recreation, Business, Computer Science, Construction
Management or a combination in related fields.
●Experience of 2+ years in trail work, construction, project management or
contracting.
●Be able to create, negotiate and manage several budgets in a database and
related organizational skills.
●Be able to manage a projects’ scope, budget, timeline, risk and delivery.
●Have excellent communication skills, both verbally and written.
●Be able to negotiate through unexpected outcomes, changes showing flexibility
in complex situations.
●Experience with Gantt charts, project management software, spread sheets, and
related tracking tools, etc.
●Be physically fit, able to carry up to a 25lb backpack and able to hike up to 5
miles in uneven terrain.
●Having strong relationships with contractors, trail workers, land managers and
staff.
Preferred Additional Knowledge & Skills
●WFA or WFR or similar 1st aid.
●Additional project management certification(s).
●Chainsaw certification (bucking/limbing/felling) or the ability to get certified in
those modalities.
●Equipment operation of excavators, UTVs, tractors, mowers, skid steers, tracked
haulers, etc.
●Experience of specialty tools- welders, grip hoists, rigging equipment, jacks, etc.
●Knowledge of using high lines, cables, advanced rigging and rock work.
●Carpentry- framing, roofing, foundation, rigging, etc.
Duties and Responsibilities
●Assist the G5 Director and G5 GIS Specialist in design, mapping, flagging and
related field notes for construction documents.
●Assist the G5 Director in creating contracts for road repair, bridge repair, trail
construction, engineering, trail maintenance and other related infrastructure on
Forest Service land. All contracts are in collaboration with USFS and G5/Camp
Grier staff.
●Assist the G5 Director in monitoring and inspecting trail construction and trail
maintenance contracts to ensure contractors are adhering to contract
specifications and timelines.
●Manage several trail crew members, volunteer programs and ensure success at
every level.
●Manage and monitor recreational users on National Forest lands to ensure their
safety.
●Assess and prescribe solutions to construction and trail related problems.
●Manage a database containing all related contracts, trails, trailwork and special
projects.
●Provide consistent training practices and directives for trail crew leaders and
volunteer coordinator.
●Keep all trail crew moral at a high level and instill pride and stewardship in
everyone's work.
Physical Demands
The candidate routinely lifts, pushes, pulls and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Work will routinely require walking multiple miles over rough and uneven terrain.
Work Environment
The employee will have office space at Camp Grier, but may work anywhere within
driving distance of McDowell County. Most of the work will be performed in a
mountainous, forested environment where the terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky, wet,
and covered with thick and tangled vegetation. Work will can occur in inclement weather
(rain, snow, freezing temperatures or temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and
under dusty conditions. Work requires the use of safety equipment such as boots,
gloves, goggles, and hardhats.
Fieldwork consists of invasive species management, facility construction maintenance,
trail maintenance (brushing, digging, grubbing, raking, rock work, surface hardening,
etc.), tree removal, using hand and power tools, project site assessments, building
bridges and related infrastructure.

Salary
$66,000 a year
Benefits
Retirement- Camp Grier will match, up to 3%, of an employee contribution to the Camp
Grier employment retirement plan.
Time off- Camp Grier will provide three weeks of paid time off to be used at the
employee's discretion.
