Hiring Range:


$34,966 - $38,463 depending upon experience and qualifications

Job Summary:


This position operates a variety of medium to heavy equipment and/or trucks in places requiring a high level of skill. Work involves operating a variety of tools, trucks and equipment and using a variety of trade skills to perform any combination of the following duties as assigned: the collection and disposal of business, commercial and residential solid waste and yard debris. Employees may operate a front end or rear load sanitation truck, knuckle boom truck, heavy duty dump truck, street sweeper, front-end loader, backhoe, excavator, roller, road grader, bucket truck, slope mower, bush hog, and/or mower with sidearm attachment. Employees may work independently or as a member of a crew. Work is performed in accordance with general and/or explicit instructions and within defined procedures. Employees perform work in accordance with OSHA and City safety rules and regulations and motor vehicle laws. Employees are subject to the hazards associated with operating heavy equipment including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, pinch points, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation and oils. Employees may be subject to the OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision in conformance with established standards and is periodically evaluated for productivity, efficiency, quality, safety, and adherence to established standards


Duties include, but are not limited to:


§ Operates front end loader garbage truck on prescribed routes to pick up commercial garbage or cardboard recycling and transport it to the county transfer station or bailing facility; travels prescribed routes to collect and dispose of garbage from commercial accounts that utilize can service.


§ Operates knuckle boom loader truck to pick up and transport yard waste and street trash for disposal.


§ Operates varied heavy equipment, including but not limited to backhoes, excavators, tractors, tractor with sidearm mower, tractor with bush hog, and leaf vacuum machines.


§ Operates equipment in street and pedestrian traffic, including but not limited to tight spaces, around underground utilities, around over-head utilities, and in other areas that require a high level of skill and competence.


§ Drives heavy dump trucks, utility trucks, and light trucks pulling various equipment including leaf vacs and trailers.


§ Operates mowers of various sizes, from push mowers to zero turn and tractor type mowers.


§ Operates various handheld equipment including weed eaters and leaf blowers.


§ May provide training to new employees or employees with lesser skills in equipment operation and work procedures.


§ Performs general preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; cleans and washes equipment.


§ Reports any unsafe conditions of equipment and other necessary repairs to supervisor.


§ Performs related duties as required.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


§ Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities, and limitations


of the heavy equipment used in the position.


§ Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions to be used in the operation of heavy equipment and performing assigned work.


§ Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations.


§ Skill in manipulating the controls of complex heavy equipment.


§ Ability to perform difficult and complex operational duties using the equipment assigned.


§ Ability to safely and efficiently operate the equipment used in the position, including but not limited to, front-end or rear-load sanitation truck, knuckle boom truck, heavy duty dump truck, street sweeper, front-end loader, backhoe, excavator, roller, road grader, bucket truck, slope mower, bush hog, and/or tractor with sidearm mower, leaf vacs, etc.


§ Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.


§ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other employees, supervisors, and the general public.


Preferred Education and Experience:


§ Graduation from high school and considerable experience in the operation of the equipment assigned or used in the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Special Requirement:


§ Possession of appropriate valid, Class B NC Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within specified time frame.
